Someone tell me how Firefly never got picked up for another season?

I'm totally in love with Jayne, of all people. I already adored Adam Baldwin as Hamilton on Angel, especially any scene with him & Harmony. When first comparing the two you might not realize that they are practically the same character. Both of them are cold businessmen. The difference is that Hamilton never wore Cargo pants or said "Ruddin'" .
Hmm.
I just came to the conclusion that i really should get out more.
